This site aims to
give an overview on the somehow thorny topic of carbon offsets. Why thorny? Carbon offsets used to have a shady reputation, they are a popular means of greenwashing and have been horribly abused negatively affecting communities and even the climate.
Yet, it does not have to be this way. Used correctly, carbon offsets can be a fantastic tool to monetize ecosystem services, stimulate innovation, reward nature protection and support communities.
This website aims to keep track on the latest developments in the carbon offset space and offer guidance to which companies and individuals on which aspects attention needs to be paid, in order to truly make an impact and avoid offsets of the dubious type.
While ambitious goals are being formulated by countries and companies to reach carbon neutrality, for now most of these goals will only be possible if carbon offsets come into play. Hard to decarbonize sectors such as transport and manufacturing will continue to rely on offsets for a while.
The vast majority of offsets will flow to emerging economies for reforestation, for nature-based solutions and for the development of renewable power and other low-carbon sources, potentially on a scale of $100 billion plus a year for parts of the world that need it the most. So it is an incredibly important market — Mark Carney
